Drew E. Burbridge was a Kansas City filmmaker, producer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and mentor whose work reflected his adventurous spirit, intellectual curiosity, and extraordinary capacity to care for others.

Drew earned his Juris Doctor from Saint Louis University School of Law in 2012, where his studies focused on intellectual property, First Amendment issues, and the emerging legal landscape surrounding streaming media. He ultimately chose to pursue his passion for media production full time and founded Stockyard Studios, a multimedia film, music, and art studio based in Kansas City’s historic West Bottoms. His legal education gave him a valuable perspective on media rights and the evolving entertainment industry.

As a filmmaker and producer, Drew worked across narrative features, documentaries, music videos, live television, international publications, nonprofit media, and film festivals. His credits included The Scent of Rain & Lightning, starring Maika Monroe, Maggie Grace, Mark Webber, Will Patton, Brad Carter, and Aaron Poole, as well as the Tribeca-premiering documentary Chasing Chasing Amy. He also directed and produced documentary projects around the world, collaborating with artists and performers including Justin Chatwin. His body of work included award-winning films and Billboard-charting music videos, while his own creative interests increasingly focused on cinéma vérité and documenting culture as it unfolded.

Drew first joined KC FilmFest International as a volunteer in 2014. His welcoming smile, enthusiasm, and willingness to help quickly made him an important part of the festival community and led to his service on its Board of Directors. Together with his wife and creative partner, Jennifer, he contributed to graphic design, sponsor development, the children’s film festival, filmmaker outreach, and international film curation.

Drew possessed a remarkable ability to recognize talent and make people feel that they belonged. He invited emerging voices into the festival, mentored filmmakers and young media professionals, and created opportunities for interns through Stockyard Studios and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City. As the festival’s unofficial tour guide, he introduced visiting filmmakers to Kansas City with such warmth and generosity that they left with a genuine appreciation for the city, its creative community, and the new friendships they had formed.

More than his impressive body of work, Drew is remembered for the spirit with which he approached it. He believed filmmaking could connect people, expand understanding, and lift others up. He gave his time, talents, and encouragement freely, leaving an enduring mark on Kansas City’s filmmaking community and on the many people fortunate enough to know and work alongside him.

Burbridge Filmmaking Seminar was established in recognition of his contributions and as a lasting tribute to the curiosity, generosity, mentorship, and love of filmmaking that defined his life. The Drew E. Burbridge Filmmaking Seminar carries forward Drew’s legacy and his belief in the power of sharing knowledge, opening doors, and helping others find their place in the filmmaking community. Drew generously offered his experience, encouragement, and connections to emerging filmmakers, always seeking opportunities to help others develop their talents and bring their stories to life. In that same spirit, the seminar connects filmmakers with experienced industry professionals who can offer practical insight, guidance, and inspiration as they take the next steps in their creative journeys.
