Voices from Our Neighbors: Immigration Journeys to Lawrence

June 10, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm CDT

The Library punctuates a months-long study of immigration in America with a look into the personal journeys of immigrants who have settled in the Lawrence, Kansas, area.

Their experiences are chronicled in a short film, Voices from Our Neighbors: Immigration Journeys to Lawrence, arising from a University of Kansas class on border crossing, immigration, and culture. The 18-minute video explores immigrants’ efforts to adapt to new lives in the Heartland amid fears, for some, that stem from uncertain citizenship status.

The film is screened, and a discussion is led by Tamara Falicov, a professor in KU’s Department of Film and Media Studies and one of the teachers of the joint learning course Bridging Borders: Latin American Immigration in Literature and Film. The event follows the Library’s Becoming American series from January to May.
