Deep Cuts and B-Sides: Popeye

Removed from any historical context, Robert Altman’s Popeye is a surrealistic jaunt. Looking for the father who deserted him as a baby, a sailor named Popeye journeys to the port town of Sweethaven. Popeye befriends an assortment of eccentrics and falls in love with Olive Oyl, who already has a suitor, the bully Bluto. Popeye also discovers an abandoned baby, Swee’Pea, whom he raises as his own. But when the spurned Bluto kidnaps Olive and the child, Popeye acts, with the help of his magic spinach.
Central Cinema Nights is a movie screening in the Central Library’s Durwood Film Vault taking place Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Join us as we watch and discuss documentaries and feature films in a socially conscious setting, chosen to fit a monthly theme. This month’s theme: Deep Cuts and B-Sides.
