Winter's Bone

Kansas City FilmFest will open with Winter’s Bone on Wednesday, April 14 at 7 pm, the first regional screening of this 2010 Sundance® Grand Jury Prize Winner. Also a recipient of the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award and the Sundance® Grand Jury Prize, Winter’s Bone is a gut‐wrenching and darkly suspenseful tale based on the novel by Missouri native Daniel Woodrell.

Award-winning filmmaker Debra Granik will attend the screening at the AMC Mainstreet and Kansas City’s own Jeff Goldsmith, noted director and Senior Editor of Creative Screenwriting Magazine, will conduct a Q&A session after the film that will later air on his renowned Creative Screenwriting podcast.

Winter’s Bone features breakout performer Jennifer Lawrence who brilliantly plays 17-year-old Ree Dolly, an overburdened teen trying to look after her two younger siblings and mentally-handicapped mother in the Missouri Ozarks. The thriller follows Ree as she attempts to track down her meth-head father who put up the family homestead up for bail before disappearing. Ree’s ex-con uncle, Teardrop, played by veteran character actor, John Hawkes, helps her along the way.

The film is a naturalistic portrayal of a community battling the effects of an invasive methamphetamine problem. The film was completely filmed in Forsythe, Missouri and includes contributions by many regional film professionals including, Cinnamon Schultz, Marina Proctor, Michael Grinage, Heather Laird, Sarah Grace Johnson, Cristina Martinez, and Shawn Patrick Nash.

Tickets for this event are sold out. Winter’s Bone is a Jubilee Showcase presentation on Wednesday, April 14th at 7 pm in the AMC Mainstreet. Jubilee Showcase tickets cost $20 and ARE NOT included in festival passes.
