A Boy and His Dog

A Boy and His Dog, a classic 40-year old independent film, has been remastered and will make an encore performance as part of Kansas City FilmFest on Saturday night, April 17th, 7 p.m. Director L.Q. Jones will be present to discuss the film and answer questions about this classic post-apocalyptic tale. The film stars actors Don Johnson and Jason Robards and has been described as a cross between George Orwell and Mel Brooks. Over the years, the critically-acclaimed film has become a cult favorite and cited as an inspiration to the Mad Max movies, among others.

A Boy and His Dog takes place in 2024 with America buried under a deep covering of radioactive dust and bands of marauders roaming the countryside. The movie follows the exploits of Vic (played by Don Johnson) and his telepathic dog, Blood who have survived for 18 years on the surface. Vic is lured to “Topeka,” a truly horrible domed city that contains what Roger Ebert called “a ghastly parody of middle-class life.” Jason Robards is a member of the ruling Committee and Vic learns that he will play a role in replenishing the local sperm bank. Audiences also learn why promos called the film “kinky” when it was released in 1976.
