Reel Spirit
Showcase for Young Filmmakers 2010
Reel Spirit inspires young people to express their creativity through film and video production. Each year elementary and middle school age filmmakers are invited to make and submit films to the Reel Spirit Showcase. Films are judged by professionals in the industry and winners are shown to a standing room only audience on Saturday morning during Kansas City FilmFest, in an actual movie theater. The student filmmakers receive a red carpet welcome prior to the showcase and receive Oscar-like trophies and certificates acknowledging their achievement.
Reel Spirit was created in 2006 by educators who saw firsthand the power of putting youth behind the camera. Student filmmakers compete in six categories: documentary, animation/claymation, news broadcast, drama/comedy, public service announcement and commercial. All productions must be written, filmed, edited and produced by the young filmmakers.
In 2009, 60 entries were submitted, representing more than 200 young filmmakers, mainly from the Kansas City region. Winning entries were screened by an audience on Saturday morning, April 25 at the Screenland Crossroads Theatre. The past showcases have seen standing room only (SRO) crowds at the Screenland.
